The Matopo Primary School Teacher-to-Teacher project is documented here. It is kindly being supported by ETAS (English Teachers Association Switzerland) and the Roger Federer Foundation.

Christmas is coming, and your mail box is full of "begging letters." Many are surely worthy causes, but one does get a little fed can we know if our donations are really getting to the root of the matter?

One reason I like the Matopo project so much is that it's small, hands on, and transparant. No ministers skimming, no Mercedes for the civil servants, no profits for "aid workers"!

Please do get in touch with Cindy Hauert if you have any ideas about how to help--not only money, but IDEAS!

best wishes

Hi Cindy
I decided to use the blog to tell you my idea. Maybe others will follow suit.
My idea is to start a Swiss-wide project of teachers (not just English teachers) and their classes collecting school material such as pencils, paper, erasers, etc to send to the school.
It would be great to use this project as a chance for children and young adults and adults to find out more about Zimbabwe and also practice their English.

We could start with the AGM next month and hope that the idea sweeps through Switzerland.

Any other ideas out there? Any opinions?

great idea! but we still need money to send the donated articles--it's quite expensive!
still, it's worth a try! let's see what the reaction is at the AGM.

Cindy and Illya,

An immediate thought. Let's find out all we can about the 200 dollar laptops initiative that is under way in many parts of the world. These laptops don't necessarily need power, they can be wound up, even run by pedalling, so I gather. I'll give you an URL or two eventually, but this an exciting project that would connect the kids in Matopo, and their teachers, to the modern and future world.
